Does Your Child Really Need Math Tuition—or Just a Different Way to Think?

When a child begins struggling with mathematics, one of the first reactions for many parents is straightforward: find extra tuition.

Maybe the child takes too long to complete homework. Perhaps multiplication tables never seem to stick. They may understand a concept when the teacher explains it but freeze when they have to calculate independently. Soon, parents start searching for math tutoring, an online math tutor, or someone who can provide additional practice after school.

But there is another question worth asking:

Does the child need more help solving math problems—or do they need stronger skills for working with numbers in the first place?

However, if tutoring is required because the child has significant curriculum gaps or needs specialized academic intervention, mental math alone may not address those needs.

Parents should therefore avoid thinking in absolute terms:

“Should I choose tutoring or mental math?”

A better question is:

“What skill does my child need to develop right now?”

Once that is clear, choosing the right program becomes much easier.

Parents do not necessarily have to choose between structured mental math learning and online convenience.
